History:

The Montgomery Grey Sox were a Negro Southern League (NSL) baseball team based in Montgomery, Alabama playing its games in Southside Park. While the NSL was regarded as a minor league throughout most of its existence, with the collapse of the first Negro National League in 1932, the league is considered a major league for that one season.

When the team started with the Negro Southern League in 1920, they were headed by John Staples, named the President of the club.[1] Staples even stepped in to umpire a game during the 1920 season.[1] The team was managed that year by Henry Hannon, who also played first base[2] and other positions during the first season. In 1920 the Grey Sox made it into the league pennant race with a 3-0 perfect game win over Atlanta. The Legendary Hall of Famer, Willie Mays also played on the Grey Sox team in 1947.

In honor and respect of the Negro Leagues and the tradition of baseball in Montgomery, AL, we are starting Montgomery Grey Sox Organization for the 2017 Season, targeting inner city/underprivileged youth (primarily African Americans) to embrace the game of both Baseball and Softball and hopefully visualize playing in College and beyond. We operate under the Metro Youth Sports, a nonprofit 501c3 corporation. Our mission of balance between the classroom and baseball skill sets that promote future collegiate opportunities. We have been with this project for 5 years yielding over 53 scholarships, and two professional contracts. Last season we had over 12 players sign college scholarships to programs such as Jacksonville State, Faulkner University, Concordia College, Bishop State, Savannah State, Texas College and others.

With our youth division (8u-12u), the focus of Montgomery Grey Sox’s Youth program emphasizes development. We want to make a significant impact in the development of our players both on and off the field. Our goal for each player is to develop their skills and ability to better prepare them for the next level of baseball through proper training and the best competition available. At the Montgomery Grey Sox, winning is never emphasized over development. If we keep that in perspective and stick to our developmental plan, winning is a byproduct of that!!!!

The Montgomery Grey Sox’s goal every year with the older divisions (14u-18u) is still player development but also to expose our players to college recruiters and professional scouts as much as possible to obtain scholarships or improve draft status potential.
The program is headed up and managed by Former Professional Player, Coach, Red Sox Scout, and Current Carver High School Wolverines Head Coach A. Rod White.

Please inform others to take part in this youth venture that has benefited our community’s pride. The program practices and competes on the Campus of Carver High School at Wolverine Field.
